College Grove church of Christ

The College Grove church of Christ had its beginnings in 1922 when Mr. William E. Marable began holding worship services in his home.

Mr. Marable had moved his family, including five children, from Eagleville to College Grove to open a general merchandise store. The Marable home and the store were both contained in a two-story house which was located on the now vacant lot between the homes of Henry Taylor and Briggs and Mary Ann Smith.

Because there was not a congregation of the Lord's church in the community and Mr. Marable did not have transportation, he decided to hold Sunday worship services in his home. Customers were invited to attend also. The first two Sundays, one other family worshiped with the Marable family. Within a few weeks others began to attend as well and a room in the Grainery was secured as a meeting place.

The Grainery was located on the back lot, presently owned by the congregation, and is now used as a parking area. The lot was purchased in November 1970 from Kenneth Sanford, son of Thomas R. Sanford.

In 1931, the congregation purchased a store building located near Henry Horton Highway at the front of the church property from Mr. R.G. Scales. This area is now used for parking.

In 1945, John E. Cotton, H.P. Skelly and T.A. Pattillo were appointed the first elders of the congregation. Also in 1945, the basement of the present building was constructed with three Sunday school rooms and one large room to be used as an auditorium. The church building was completed in 1950 with the addition of the auditorium above the basement. In May 1971 the house and property adjoining on the south side was purchased from Loula and W.D. Scales, the son of R.G. Scales.

An Annex building, including four classrooms, was completed on the west side of the property in the autumn of 1978. The multi-purpose building has been used for many church and community functions, including the state licensed, five day/week daycare center. The College Grove Daycare Center operated from January 1985 until December 1996 and served children from six weeks to kindergarten. Currently, in addition to other church functions, the Annex serves as the classroon for the Middle Tennessee School of Preaching and Biblical Studies.
